#UNSTEREOTYPE with UN ambassador Danai Gurira

UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and award-winning playwright and actress Danai Gurira stars as General Okoye in the two largest movie franchises in history: Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which went on to become the #1 highest-grossing film in history.

Danai spoke with Madeline Di Nonno (President and CEO, Geena Davis Institute for Gender in Media) at the Unstereotype Alliance Global Member Summit about the importance of representation and role models in storytelling, her experiences growing up in Zimbabwe and the US, and as an African actor in Hollywood. And she explained why she is turning her focus as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador to the dismantling of gender norms and harmful stereotypes.

Emotions. We all have ‘em. Here’s a fantastic reminder from @stef_sheldon of the important distinction between 'low return' and 'high return' emotions.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That is not to say we need to be avoiding the low returns at all costs, more that we should practice acknowledging how little they really serve us in the long-term, big picture.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👌🏼 And ageing does such a grand job of bringing the big picture into focus, doesn’t it? Fine tuning what really matters.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The upshot? The more aware you can be of the early stages of low return emotions, the better you’ll be at steering (or veering when necessary!) away from them.

It’s not easy, especially after the almighty couple of years we’ve all had, but it’s worth it.

Though divorce rates in developed countries like the US, UK, and Australia currently range from around 30% up to a staggering >50% (in the US*), the stereotype of the 'blended family' as the best (or only!) solution once separated or divorced people with kids re-partner, persists.

Why?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
An anonymous contributor, a single mum, has generously shared with us her journey of meeting and marrying a man with 3 children. It's a story of struggle followed by enlightenment and then hope as she and her new husband navigate the challenges of trying to blend their families...through COVID!

In the end, it was the children who suffered the most.

They've now joined a rising global movement to turn tradition on its head and, simply, UNblend the blended.

What's love got to do with it? Kind of everything. 💘

Nothing like Valentine’s Day to remind you how many years you’ve been single. It's seven. Sounds weird even saying that out loud.

Did I think when I walked away from what, to be honest, was a pretty decent marriage to a really good guy, that I’d spend the next seven years essentially alone?

No I did not.

Would I still have left? Probably. Plus I’ve clawed my way back from an emotional and wellbeing abyss and helped shepherd two young children through the quagmire of their parents’ broken marriage in the interim, no mean feat. And all that requires time, and energy, and focus.

So what’s love got to do with it? Everything. Self-love.

My old friend @israelpsmith asked yesterday “WHY THE ACTUAL F*CK” wouldn’t we extend a little of the love, honouring, kindness, compassion, grace, and forgiveness we have for our partners and friends, to ourselves? Why the f*ck not, indeed.

Self-love is difficult, conditioned as many of us are to put the needs of others before our own. But it’s essential, for us all.

And as for dating? ”Keep moving,” a kind friend said when I was lamenting the hell on earth that is internet dating, “you are a doll and there's company out there who can see it.” Thanks @thelucybloom. 👊🏼

🤙🏼 FAILURE // We love physical injury and scarring as a metaphor for failure as we've all felt pain in our bodies before, so it's relatable.

Bruises fade. Tattoos just discolour and stretch and end up dated and embarrassing because they were so ill-considered and you never dreamed of waistlines going up or down or being 20 pounds heavier or how you'd feel about them when you reached middle-age (or so we hear 😉).

But they never go away.

On the contrary, failure is temporary and always enlightening, if you can make space for it.
